Give the Young Man a Chance

On June 21, the Chicago Bulls had two first round picks. The Bulls had the seventh pick and the 22nd pick of the draft. The Seventh pick of the Bulls drafted 6-10 251lbs center from Duke University, Wendall Carter Jr. After the announcement Jay Bilas of ESPN compared him to Al Horford who plays for the Boston Celtics. Then Chauncey Billups who at first says yes, he plays like Al Horford, but I compare him more like Carlos Boozer. Then ESPN shows off highlights of both Boozer and Carter Jr, while Billups breaks down the way both play the game. As soon as Billups said Boozer name I said that will not go over well with Bulls fans. To me Boozer was a scapegoat at the Bulls not winning a championship. Not Derrick Rose injury or having to go through Lebron James to get to the championship. Or the other thing I saw in Chicago newspapers is that Duke players do not do well in the NBA. So, let’s look at Carter’s comparison Boozer and see if he will be a good fit.

Carlos Boozer drafted in the second round of the 2002 draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. In two seasons with Cleveland Boozer averaged 12.6 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.7 blocks in just under 30 minutes per a game.
Boozer than signed with the Utah Jazz as a free agent in the summer of the 2004-2005 season. After missing the playoffs, the first two years with Utah, Boozer turned it up having his best two seasons and helping Deron Williams and Head Coach Jerry Sloan to the playoffs.2007-08 season Boozer led the team in scoring (21.1ppg) and rebounds (10.9). In 2008-09 season Boozer had an injury that only let him play 37 regular season games. Carlos still led the team with 10.2 rebounds a game. In the 2009-10 season Carlos came back leading the team in points per game (19.5), rebounds (11.2 per game), and field goal percentage (58%). But they still could not get past the Los Angeles Lakers for the third year in a row.
In the summer of 2010 the Jazz traded Carlos and a second-round pick (Malcolm Lee) to Chicago for Mario Austin ending his time with the Jazz with average of 19.3 points per game, 10.5 rebounds 2.9 assists, one steal a game, and 0.4 blocks a game.
Now with Chicago in the 2010-2011 season, Carlo found himself the third option to score, unlike the second option he was in Utah. Derrick Rose and Luol Deng were the first two candidates to score. Boozer still was the second highest leading scorer with 17.5 points per a game in 59 games cause of injuries. The Bulls lost to Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.

The 2011-2012 season was shortened by a lockout, so each team played 66 games. Carlos started every game being third on the team with 15 points per game and second with 8.5 rebounds per game and only averaging 29.5 minutes a game his lowest since his rookie season. In the first game of the playoffs the Bulls lost their MVP Derrick Rose to a injury that led to the Philadelphia 76ers upsetting the Bulls in the first round. Boozer led the Bulls in rebounds for the playoffs with almost 10 rebounds per a game.
Without Rose for the 2012-13 season the Bulls had to rely on a balanced team scoring led by Deng (16.5) and Carlos Boozer (16.2). Boozer was second in rebound per game also with just under ten rebounds per a game. The Bulls would make the playoffs and lose to the Miami heat in 5 games of the eastern semi-conference finals. Boozer had a team high in points in five of the twelve playoff games. He also led the team six time in rebounds during the playoffs.
With Derrick Rose still not 100 percent for the 2013-14 season, as Rose played in only 10 games. Carlos time decreased to 28.4 minutes a game, with Taj Gibson becoming a fan and coach favorite. Boozer still led the starting lineup in points per game with 13.8. In the playoffs Boozer minutes dropped to 24 minutes a game. He averaged just under 10 points and 8 rebounds a game. With the emergence of Gibson and the Bulls looking for a spark the Bulls waived Gibson and he signed with the Lakers.
Boozer played one season with the Lakers playing a career low of 23.8 minutes per game. In Boozer 13-year career in the NBA he averaged at 16.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 0.4 blocks per game. These stats are comparable to Glenn rice, Lamar Odom, David Lee, Larry Johnson, and even the great James Worthy. Really you don’t believe me!

Worthy 11 years all with the Lakers averaged 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 0.7 blocks per game.
So, if the Bulls can get Carter to play like Boozer I am fine with that. Cause that’s what the Bulls need. They have scoring, if they resign Zach Lavine, along with Laurie Markkanen. The Bulls were 27 in league defense. Carter brings that inside defense presence that they did not have last year. He also a very good rebounder. So, the future is looking bright for the Bulls.
