The Chicago White Sox have the third worst record in the league at the halfway point of the 2018 season.
On December 6, 2016, the Chicago White Sox made a trade to spark the rebuilding of this franchise that had their last World Series win in 2005. After the 2005 season, the Sox tried to rebuild on the fly, by going after free agents and not younger players. Taking chances on players like Adam Dunn. Dunn would either hit a home run or strikeout. Dunn had a career 462 home runs and struck out 2,379 times in 6,883 at-bats. They also tried Adam Laroche, but after one season and about to start his second season he and the White Sox management had a personal disagreement that led to his retirement. With Chris Sale not happy and doing everything he can to force the Sox’s hand, they traded him to the Boston Red Sox for Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe, and Victor Diaz.

The Sox would then trade starting centerfield Adam Eaton to the Washington Nationals for Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, and Dane Dunning on December 9, 2016. Then at the All-Star break, last year the Chicago Cubs and White Sox struck a deal that sent Jose Quintana to the Cubs for minor leaguers Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Cease, Matt Rose, and Bryant Flete.
Now that the Sox are 29-54 16.5 games out of first, and 24 games out of the second wild-card spot they need to find a spark to get this young team to start moving forward to get back to the playoffs in the next three years. Moncada is batting 221 with ten home runs and 31 RBIs in 75 games. He also has a 289 on base average, 395 slugging percentage, and 683 ops. Granted this is only his first full year in the majors, but when he is the leading man the Sox traded for, he needs to be doing better than that Michael Kopech has been in the triple-A ball with a record of 3-6 with a 4.42 ERA. Basabe was just promoted to double a ball after hitting 266 with 9 home runs and 30 RBIs. Victor Diaz has been on the disabled list all season. Lucas Giolito is 5-7 with a 6.59 era; he also leads the American league in giving up walks with 51. Reynaldo Lopez so far is a bright spot of the trades, he is on the White Sox with a record of 4-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 17 starts, and 11 quality starts. Dunning is in AA playing for the Birmingham Barons with a 5-2 276 era in 11 starts but on the disabled list and most likely out for the year. The Sox promoted Jimenez from AA to AAA Charlotte, and he is still hitting the ball. Batting 293 with a 383/463/846 since his promotion. Cease was promoted to AA this season after going 9-2 with a 3.13 era in 15 starts. Matt Rose is batting 203 11 home runs and 29 RBIs, Bryant Flete 275 1 home runs and 19 RBIs both playing for AA Bingham Barons.

The White Sox are 27th out of 30 in ERA. Lopez has been the most consistent starting pitcher for the Sox. The Sox will probably try to unload James Shields and closer Joakim Soria to a team that needs pitching for the playoffs. However, the Sox will probably only get minors leaguers for these two players. The Sox will then bring up Michael Kopech to bolster their starters. The only offensive player the Sox might get some value is Jose Abreu, who is hitting 271, 12 home runs, and 51 RBIs. Sox’s fans are saying what about Avisail Garcia. Garcia has only played 28 games this year and 4 home runs and 10 RBIs he is looking at about 15 home runs and 45 RBIs if he plays the rest of the season. Tim Anderson is only 25 years old and is the only Sox player that can hit at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases this season. Anderson can be one of the leaders when this team is ready to win.
So how do the Sox jump start this team that looks like it took a step back this year? While bringing up Jimenez after he comes back from his injury, and Kopech this year is a start. Cease and Dunning (injured out for the year) and Basabe is a couple of years away. Moreover, Luis Roberts had a massive set back as he is out 4 to 8 weeks in class A ball after an injury. Zach Collins Catcher in double AA could be the guy to that. He is a power hitting catcher. Collins just won the AA all-star home run derby. Other than that, the Sox next few prospects are at least two years away.
The Sox are in year two of the rebuild, and with the injuries or players not performing to expectations the White Sox might need to do a jump start before they start falling behind their timeline. That said trade for a player that his having a down season that they feel can help them in the next few years. Kind of like what the Cincinnati Reds did to get Matt Harvey from the New York Mets. The Reds traded backup catcher Devin Mesoraco for Harvey. A player I would be looking at after he comes off the disabled list is Dylan Bundy of the Baltimore Orioles, a record of 6-7 with a 3.35 era and ten quality starts in 16 games. The Orioles are looking for hitting especially at first base with Chris Davis hitting 155 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs in 245 at-bats. The White Sox would get a 25-year-old that fits their scheme, and the Orioles would get Abreu who would easily hit 30 home runs in that ballpark.

That the way I see it. Patrick Delaney.
